Undergraduate students are invited to submit a paper for the 2011 APS
Undergraduate Essay Competition. The winning paper will be awarded a prize
of $75. The winner should be prepared to present his or her paper at the
APS 2011 conference.

Papers in any area of philosophy are welcome, and should not exceed 3,000
words. Submissions should include a 100 word abstract, be clearly marked
“Undergraduate Essay Competition,” and include the author’s name and contact
information on a separate title page.

All submissions must be e-mailed by 22 July.

Here is an updated announcement from the coordinators of the National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference:

Join us for an exploration of current controversies in bioethics related to this year’s theme, “Bioethics: More Personal or More Global?” at the 2011 National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference hosted at Duke University, March 18-20, 2011. It will bring together leaders in bioethics and students from across the nation to address a broad range of bioethical issues in personal genomics and global health.

The conference offers opportunities for students to submit a paper or participate in the Bioethics Bowl. Deadline for submission of abstracts is January 17. Deadline to sign up as a team for the Bioethics Bowl is February 18.

We invite submissions of papers from graduate students to the Edinburgh Graduate Epistemology Conference, which will take place from the 18-19th March 2011. The philosophy club at Florida Gulf Coast University will be hosting its first annual student philosophy conference in the spring semester of 2011. It will be a two day conference (April 8-9), welcoming papers from undergraduate and graduate students throughout the state and the region . The conference will be divided into topic-based panels, and there will be a keynote speaker TBA.

CFP: IWGPC 2011

From the directors of the Intermountain West Graduate Philosophy Conference:

We invite submissions of quality papers by graduate students (first-rate undergraduate papers may be considered). The conference will be hosted April 7th through 9th, by the University of Utah Philosophy Department. Papers from any field in mainstream philosophy will be considered, and should be limited to 4,000 words. Each presentation will be scheduled for one hour, and will include commentary and a period for Q&A.

Episteme is a student-run journal that aims to recognize and encourage excellence in undergraduate philosophy by providing examples of some of the best work currently being done in undergraduate philosophy programs. Episteme is published under the auspices of Denison University’s Department of Philosophy.

Episteme will consider papers written by undergraduate students in any area of philosophy. Papers are evaluated according to the following criteria: quality of research, depth of philosophic inquiry, creativity, original insight and clarity. Submissions to be considered for the twenty-second volume (May 2011) should adhere to the following stipulations:

Competition for Best Formal Paper by a Graduate Student

Aporia is Brigham Young University’s undergraduate philosophy journal. Their call for papers is for the Fall 2010  edition and will remain open until Monday, October 4th.  Aporia will be published online and the authors of selected papers will be notified in early November. Papers should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words, on any philosophical topic. The papers must be unpublished and may not be in submission elsewhere. The author must be an undergraduate during the semester of publication. Critical notices, short 1 to 4 page responses to papers in the current edition of Aporia, are also welcome. Email submissions and/or questions to aporia@byu.edu. Format submissions for blind review by excluding any identifying information within the paper itself. Include a cover letter with your name, the title of the submission, email, postal address, and university. Submissions should be in .doc(x), .rtf, .wpd, or .pdf format. (more…)

CFP: Ethics@MSU

The Philosophy Department at Montclair State University is seeking submissions for Ethics@MSU, an undergraduate conference on Ethics and ethical issues. This conference will be held on the campus of Montclair State University, on Friday, May 7th, 2010 at 3 PM. Submissions should be original, scholarly papers written on any area of Ethics. Papers can address cross-over areas between Ethics and other branches of philosophy, such as philosophy of mind, epistemology, social philosophy, and metaphysics. Papers can also be historical (e.g., “Ethics in Plato’s Early Thought”) or they can be problem-oriented (e.g., “The Ethics of Internet Privacy”). Ideally, paper submissions should be approx. 12 pages long, and speakers should plan on having 20 minutes to present their work. Submissions will be judged on the basis of relevance and writing quality, and authors whose work is selected will be notified via email. The conference will be followed by a banquet, on campus, and all participants (audience and speakers) are invited to attend.

The deadline for submissions is April 30th, 2010.
